Partly trained learners

Continue from where you are — not from the beginning.

Already had lessons with another instructor, practised privately or returning after a break? We start by understanding what you can already do, what feels comfortable and where you may need more support. You will not be expected to start again simply because you are learning with someone new.

Finding your starting point

Your first lesson gives us an opportunity to see where your driving is now. We will talk about your previous experience and spend some time driving so we can identify what is already working well and what may need more attention.

We may look at:

  • General control of the car.
  • Observations and awareness.
  • Junctions and roundabouts.
  • Positioning, speed and planning.
  • Parking and reversing.
  • Confidence in different traffic situations.
  • How independently you make decisions.
  • Any areas you already know you would like to improve.

This is not a test. It simply gives us a useful starting point for your future lessons.

Building on what you already know

Changing instructor does not mean relearning everything. If something you already do is safe and effective, we can build on it.

Where something needs developing, we will identify what is causing the difficulty and focus our lessons where they will be most useful.

Moving forward

Once we understand your starting point, we can agree what to work on next. This might mean developing particular skills, gaining experience in unfamiliar situations, improving consistency or moving towards practical test preparation.

The aim is to make the best use of the experience you already have while helping you become a safe and increasingly independent driver.
